seriously, I have much to tell... :)

Curry-Okie

Some call it "curry okie", some "kara okay", some "karao kee" but my office calls it Red Box (that's where we usually go for some karaoke action). Like, "Is Red Box on tonight??" or "When wanna Red Box?"

Last Wednesday, my colleagues and I decided to tear ourselves away from work (which was difficult) and just go and sing our hearts out! With our three funky and straight interns in tow plus two Thai task force and one french trainee, it was confusing but fun!

Everyone (almost)!

Shiowling and me...

EnHui: Me too, me too!
Presee: Hey, what about me?!

My three hyper and straight interns!
They were belting out Air Supply and stuff. Ayo.

A conversation with a friend about guys who prefer guys to girls and I got this question...

"Your interns again ah?"

Wah. Like all my trainees have been "not straight" all this while. Lol!

Anyways, the performer of the night goes to...
Enhui! Move over John!
(check out Jonjon in this post)

See how Nicholas and Enhui held on to their mikes.

On another matter...

Aih! So happy that Sushi ZanMai has found its way to One Utama! My fave affordable sushi place. I'm contented.

My senior in college works there and I suppose thats why the dessert look so cool... :D I have blogged about ZanMai before but need to dig abit to find the post. Here it is! Sushi and Me.

and then later that night, I went to SS2 Murni's on another quest to try different types of food on every trip there. This time I tried the Meatball Spaghetti and the Dragon Pizza. Both were pretty yummy. :D Ayo, I think I need to start jogging again!

dramas

Was in training the past 2 days and my mind wasn't in "fighter" mode so I decided to watch some dramas. Good choice!

I just found this Japanese drama called Love 2000 which I watched 7 years ago and I conclude

I still love Takeshi Kenishiro! :D

I have also just watched 4 episodes of Grey's Anatomy Season 4 (I planned to watch only 2 epi but I got a phone call halfway through and got pissed off and decided to watch another 2. Excuses.) and I conclude

I love McDreamy!

I was as usual clicking away blindly and found this song called 747 by Kent and I conclude

I like it. :D

...though I don't really get it.

I did some research on the song and it was somehow named 747 because
1) the song is 7 minutes and 47 seconds long (ooh)
2) it might have something to do with the boeing planes (?)
3) if your add up the numerical names of the band members (a=1, b=2), it will come up to 747 (oooh)

Beats me. Sounds nice for now :)

sometimes

Sometimes... these things happen.

In the midst of everyone going crazy with work in the office...

Yvonne: Let's listen to something trashy.
Peiching: OK.
Yvonne: *click,click, double click*

britney: Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme more!

I like it when everyone plays along. :D

learning chinese with jay chou

There is only ever one chinese song which I know and that is Tong Hua by Guang Liang. Of course I know many other songs but this is the only song which lyrics I can remember from beginning till end. That is, in han yu pin yin version. It was during this period where everyone was crazy about this song and Sunway Pyramid was playing it day to night at the skating ring. Thanks to my friends who patiently taught me word by word and even explained the meaning in detail, I could sing along when we went to Red Box.

Anyhow, many years have passed and I was sick of Tong Hua and therefore have decided to sing something else. One day before we went to Red Box, my colleague, who is also an avid Jay Chou fan, asked me to choose a chinese song from his very extensive song collection and even offered to do a duet to cover up my supposed terrible singing (and he is supposedly very Jay). I couldn't read chinese characters ma, so I chose Shan Hu Hai because the "shan" looked like the "shan" in my name. "shan hu" meant coral while "hai" meant sea and so basically it meant Coral Sea.

Wah piang. Such a difficult song to begin with. I sang just reading from the pin yin version which I printed and vowed to learn it by heart to fully appreciate the song. Anyways, I found a webby which has the pin yin of the song and also the meaning of the song. I agree that it is one effective way to learn chinese or mandarin in particular. When you know the meaning of the song, you will appreciate it better and it will also be easier to remember the words, the character and the pronounciation. Anyways, here's a sample:

Chinese Pop Music: Jay Chou Shan Hu Hai

See what I mean when I said difficult song? I didn't know it was a sad song until I read the translation. See? No appreciation. Anyways, I wanted to choose another song which was not so sad and decided to click on "hei se you muo" which meant Black Humour. Aiya. Also another sad song. Luckily I also have Wang Lee Hom with "Wei Yi" meaning Only One. Lee Hom!! This one, I dunno sad or not but OK lah.

In Wei Yi, to say "it is not easy", instead of "bu rong yi", he sang "tan he rong yi". So we learned something new today!

Anyways, my interest in language have expanded a little to Korean! I learned how to introduce myself from my very Korean-waved trainee, Jonjon.

Anyong aseyo! Yvonne im nida. Manaso pang kap sim ni da!

which meant:

Hi! My name is Yvonne. Nice to meet you.

You just need to replace my name with yours and you are good to go. I also have one trainee from Korea (who was impressed with how I intro-ed myself!:) and she even taught me how to write my name.

Well, they don't really pronounce "v" in Korean and so my name sounding like ee-von is written as yi bon. I remember in college, I have a Korean friend, Brown, who called me yibong throughout the whole degree program and I actually thought he was making fun of me. Another friend, Owen, from China will call me "yi wen". No, scratch that. He called me chou yi wen. Something that's not so good but that's how he call everyone unless he needs their help. Haha! Chou this, chou that. Gosh.

Anyhow, I need to also brush up on my French. There will be some french trainees coming soon and I think it will be good to practice with them.

Btw, I saw this song CD for sale in Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and it features this french song which I can sing! Les Champs-Elysees. My classmates will remember this song because we had to sing this song as one of our oral test.

Je me baladais sur l'avenue, le coeur ouvert.... remember?!

aiya... those were the days...

"What chemicals do they sell?"

One day at work (a telephone conversation conveyed by one of the managers):

"My Chemical Romance will be coming up to the bar later"
"OK, where is this company from? What chemicals do they sell?"

Later on...

"You haven't heard of them?" asked Yvonne.
"No, what songs do they sing?" asked another.
"Erm, Helena... Black Parade..." said Yvonne knowing only these two songs.
"Oh, the video with the funeral thing... scary" offered another who probably have Astro and MTV at home.
"How come you guys haven't heard of them?" asked Yvonne trying to sound a bit more updated than the rest.
"Don't know. Beyond I know la," said another.

For the record, I do know who My Chemical Romance is. I have their song "Helena" in my laptop! "Black Parade" is somewhere.. I couldn't find it... somewhere. Anyways, I know a grand total of 2 songs by MCR. And I do think that these two songs are pretty good. You do find yourself humming to it sometimes. Well, I do.

I have always thought they were a bit goth and emo and stuff. But thanks to Wikipedia (which I have just utilized 3 minutes ago), I now know that they deny being emo. They are rock or violent and dangerous pop. Wow, the whole music genre vocab is growing everyday.

Anyways, I'm excited to go to their concert tonight. Believe it or not, this is my first concert. I'm just really worried about "fitting in". Who are their fans? What do they talk about? What do they wear?

I have decided to wear something blackish because
a) I'll probably blend in better... somehow something tells me that everyone will wear black
b) I suppose when there are a lot of people, all the pushing and shoving will probably result in dirt on light coloured clothes
c) it is monsoon season and it will definitely rain and the ground will get muddy and slushy and splashy and think about the laundry later on
d) so it will rain and we will get wet and wearing white is just a bit rude isn't it?

I think I'm giving this whole concert thing too much thought.

"Fix You"

I think I have been spending too much time on my laptop for the past few days that I started doing things I don't normally do such as searching for forums and blogs and what little bits and pieces of news or articles on almost everything. Even property forums! Not that I understood much of what they were saying but I guess I sort of know a little bit on property investment now and which areas are good to buy property now. They even have rankings on the areas which have the most potential for profit. Ooh. I was browsing and browsing somemore when I suddenly realised that I did not turn on my WMP at all for all those hours spent at the pc!

So I created a new playlist from all those forgotten songs like the Andrea Bocelli's, Diana Krall's and so on. Easy listening was the order of the day. Not so much of the Black Eyed Peas and stuff. I have also started to like Imogen Heap's songs very much. Burn introduced some songs and then I found out that the other song which David sent me some time ago, Let Go by Frou Frou was actually Imogen Heap herself. Ooh. No wonder they sort of sound similar. Anyways, I was getting sort of melodramatic and then there was Coldplay. Coldplay's Fix You suddenly made me wanna cry. I dunno why. I decided to check out what people thought about the meaning of the song. (I told you I spend too much time on the laptop lately). Anyways, apparently Chris Martin wrote it when Gwyneth's father passed away and she was so upset and was crying and all. How sweet. I got goosebumps just imagining the kind emotions that was going on.

Some dude also thought that the song was written for broken toasters.
"When you lose something you can't replace..."

I just think the song is reassuring and even sort of like comforting. Someone will always be there for you. Probably try to fix your problem. Or just be there for you. I'm thinking Someone upstairs too.

"Fix You"

When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I...

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I...

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

sing a song today

Day before yesterday, everyone in the HR department went for a karaoke session. There were 10 of us in total (inclusive of us 4 trainees of course). The rules were simple: everyone had to sing at least 5 songs. With the exception of Bin and Shiow Ling who were the Karaoke King and Queen (5 wouldn't be enough). So everyone else had their own little sneaky plans on how to avoid the 5 songs. You know, pretend to go to the toilet when the song is coming up. Fake a bad, bad mood. Just refuse (applicable only for Boss). Choose an easy song and pull everyone else to sing along. Sing a duet. Take more food and just say they are there for the food(Sanny has been planning this the whole day).

We went after work and somehow I guess 5 songs were not enough. Singing is such a good a remedy for a long day. Everyone was just letting go. It was nice to see a different person from what we normally see. All those sneaky plans? Erm, what sneaky plans? Even Sanny sang a few numbers. Boss was showing off his vocal prowess. I mean, he sings it like it is. Bin was showing off his Jay Chou songs. Shiow Ling and Jennifer were hitting the Canto ones. Ms. Presee was doing the oldies. Philip was the one with all those happy songs(because he didn't just spend 8.5 hours at work). Ardhan was doing very well with Peterpan's because he pronounced it like it is. Murni was really emotional with Ruth Sahanaya. I sang almost everything. Like if you need back up, I'm there. Whitney? Sure. Mariah? Sure. I even printed Han Yu Pin Yin lyrics of Shan Hu Hai by Jay Chou and Lara because Bin requested a duet. Sure.

The real hilarious one was when My Humps, which was randomly picked, came up, nobody wanted to sing and so Philip and I just went ahead with it. It rocked. We even had to do an encore performance and agree that it would be our song when we go karaoke again. It was fun. Although we secretly know that we might have sounded like William Hung. We were quite hungover the next day and somehow got through the Merdeka Celebrations with full on "semangat patriotik". Anything for Malaysia. Surprisingly, nobody called in sick. Not even Ardhan. Impressive indeed.

Overheard during the celebrations...
Ardhan : I'm not Malaysian wei.
Me: It's OK. You need to get a job here, right?
Ardhan : Tanggal 31! BULAN LAPAN LIMA PULUH TUJUH!!

Overheard during Merdeka lunch...
Boss: SO, when are we going for karaoke again?

Overheard at the office...
Shiow Ling: My humps... my humps

song I don't get sick of

A song that transports me to another world, another time, another space... a dream, a fantasy. Common, overplayed on the radio... and , erm, singer not cun. Still a fantasy I wish was true. Songs are meaningful again.

"Chasing Cars" - Snow Patrol

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

OK, back to reality, back to my big D. -_-

Life

Well, it sucks at the moment.

The other day my colleague showed me a picture of a little boy in some third world country. He was so thin his ribs were showing and he was sitting in a puddle of mud. He was weak and his eyes were tired. A vulture was perched on a rock nearby watching his next meal closely. When is he going to stop fighting and shut his eyes for good? My colleague commented that, "Here I am complaining about getting fat. It is true. Sometimes we just complain and complain but we never realise how lucky we are."

How lucky we are.

How lucky I am.

I have to be thankful for everyone around me who has been so caring and I have to be strong for them.

I went shopping.

My new shoe

View the full collection here. It is soft and has this rubber thing at the back so it fits perfectly and is quite comfortable. And yes, I still love black and white. Especially when they are together.

Erm, just wanted to let you all know that I think I'm doing fine (I did get a new pair of shoes).

Anyways, over the past week, I have been keeping myself busy with work and looking for songs for a project. I just realised how much I take songs for granted. I mean, I will like a song here and a song there and then just keep jumping. I just never really thought that maybe I will like the works of a certain singer and his songs as they can relate to me and so on. Maybe because I just didn't make the effort to understand the lyrics in the first place. So far, I think Goo Goo Dolls has the most songs in my playlist but nope, have not done my research on them yet. Also, I realise that most people have more Westlife's song in their playlist than others. Why is that? Anyways, for the past few days, besides looking for "hot" songs (or so it was referred to), I have also found a few other songs that I could relate to.

One of them was Nelly Furtado's All Good Things.

Honestly what will become of me
don't like reality
It's way too clear to me
But really life is daily
We are what we don't see
Missed everything daydreaming

[Chorus:]
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to end?
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to an end?

Traveling I only stop at exits
Wondering if I'll stay
Young and restless
Living this way I stress less
I want to pull away when the dream dies
The pain sets it and I don't cry
I only feel gravity and I wonder why

Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to end?
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to an end?

Well the dogs were whistling a new tune
Barking at the new moon
Hoping it would come soon so that they could
Dogs were whistling a new tune
Barking at the new moon
Hoping it would come soon so that they could
Die die die die die

Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to end?
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to an end?

Well the dogs were barking at a new moon
Whistling a new tune
Hoping it would come soon
And the sun was wondering if it should stay away for a day 'til the feeling went away
And the sky was falling on the clouds were dropping and
the rain forgot how to bring salvation
the dogs were barking at the new moon
Whistling a new tune
Hoping it would come soon so that they could die.

I don't really know about the dogs barking at the new moon so they could die but liked the chorus. I also found an "older" song which was a sing-along when I was in high school. I didn't know it would apply.

Remember Vertical Horizon? - Best I Ever Had

So you sailed away
Into a grey sky morning
Now I'm here to stay
Love can be so boring

Nothing's quite the same now
I just say your name now

[Chorus]
But it's not so bad
You're only the best I ever had
You don't want me back
You're just the best I ever had

So you stole my world
Now I'm just a phony
Remembering the girl
Leaves me down and lonely

Send it in a letter
Make yourself feel better

[Chorus]
But it's not so bad
You're only the best I ever had
You don't need me back
You're just the best I ever had

And it may take some time to
Patch me up inside
But I can't take it so I
Run away and hide
And I may find in time that
You were always right
You're always right

So you sailed away
Into a grey sky morning
Now I'm here to stay
Love can be so boring

What was it you wanted
Could it be I'm haunted

[Chorus]
But it's not so bad
You're only the best I ever had
I don't want you back
You're just the best I ever had
The best I ever had
The best I ever

I don't really know if I should get to a priest soon (haunted) but yeah, I think songs are kind of helpful. They sort of accompany you. I feel... accompanied.

I think I am still quite lost. But I also think I'm better now. Anyhow, thanks dear friends. Love you guys.

What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"
They're really saying "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world
